An outdoor Wild West play area at Buffalo Grill, with a bull, cacti and a log tunnel for little adventurers.

Buffalo Grill wanted to extend its Wild West world beyond the restaurant with an outdoor play area for children aged 4 to 10. The brief called for a distinctive space with warm, bright colours that would reflect the brand’s identity. The available outdoor area measured 6.75 × 5.80 metres and included drainage grates to accommodate. We designed a 26.2 m² Pop-up Play layout to bring a range of play opportunities into this compact setting.

We imagined a small Wild West landscape to explore in the open air. A bull in the brand’s colours, green cacti and a hollow log tunnel create familiar landmarks, while rounded mounds and a small slide add different ways to move through the space.
The sandy tones of the EPDM surface evoke the desert, with darker markings suggesting a trail between the play features. Children can crawl through the log, climb onto the bull, move across the mounds and slide down the slope.
Rather than treating the outdoor area as a separate addition, we used the restaurant’s world as the starting point for a playful setting that children can make their own.

The outdoor setting gives children a place to move, explore and play during a family restaurant visit. Crawling through the tunnel, climbing, balancing and sliding offer varied physical challenges, while the Wild West theme encourages imaginative play. With several low play features across a compact layout, children can choose their own route and invent stories together. The play area adds an outdoor moment of adventure to the meal.
The outdoor play area extends Buffalo Grill’s identity into another part of the site and gives its youngest guests a dedicated space. Its recognisable theme makes play part of the restaurant experience. The layout is designed to strengthen the appeal of a family visit by giving children an additional reason to enjoy their time on site. The movable Pop-up Play concept also offers flexibility in how the outdoor area is arranged.
