A schoolyard to explore, a new way to slide into play
Opened in 2025 in Montpellier’s Mosson district, Hypatie is a new school designed by TLA and Studio Jaouen, with Atelier Roberta on the landscape team. Its planted outdoor spaces extend across several levels. The city describes these spaces as an adventure schoolyard. In keeping with the principles of oasis schoolyards, planting, varied uses and opportunities for movement give children different ways to spend their break. Our contribution to this wider project focused on the outdoor slide.
Our role was to install a slide within the school’s existing architectural design. Alongside the broad outdoor staircase, the enclosed tube follows the change in level and opens into the lower courtyard
Its light-coloured exterior sits discreetly beside the pale steps and railings, against the backdrop of timber façades and planting. The slide gives this part of the schoolyard a playful dimension: the difference in height becomes something children can experience through movement. A focused addition that makes room for the simple pleasure of sliding outdoors.
Climbing the steps, anticipating the descent and sliding into the courtyard add a short sequence of movement and excitement to playtime. The slide invites children to try an experience at their own pace and enjoy a shared game, taking turns. It complements a schoolyard where active play can sit alongside quieter moments and contact with nature. This diversity is central to the oasis approach: providing different opportunities so that children with different interests can find their place.
For the school, the slide adds a clear play opportunity within an outdoor space that already has a strong architectural and landscape identity. Its position beside the staircase uses the site’s change in level rather than requiring a separate play tower. The contribution is specific: a sliding experience that supports the wider ambition of an engaging, varied schoolyard. Planting and environmental design belong to the overall project; the slide brings a complementary invitation to move and play.
